A subject long having held fascination for me, as for many, many little girls. I know not when, but at some point in my childhood, having seen or heard of these magical beings who seemed so free, so powerful, so independent, and so intrinsically beautiful, that I longed to be one, to see one, to at least believe that they, too , exist in the world, in their own underwater realm, watching us when we swim, following our clambering lives, actually, feeling sorry for us mere land-lubbing mortals.
There is in us all a deep-seated, an innate, need to return to the sea, where once we lived, gills and all, and yes, had tails. We had all - all land creatures - originally been sea animals. Our long ago ancestors, in the curiosity which we still see today in fishes, had finally let their fascination with the lovely verdant scenarios on the shoreline beckon them to somehow impress their wishes upon their DMA, and they slowly developed little walking fins.
And, too, there is the primal memory of having lived for nine months in a watery world, round, safe, sloshing in comforted protection from the banging, clanging outside world.
We all began as mercreatures, and any view of an embryo lets one know how very close we are not only to sea creatures, but to all other creatures- since human embryos are indistinguishable from tiny beings of all kinds- from shrimp to whales, from elephants to zebras. And, of course, the image of a sperm is the very image of a minute MerSprite.
This halcyon time of our individual embryonic geneses, this floating, mysterious beginning, when all we felt was the cradling movement of liquidity around us, connects us all to the love of the sea- It is this original home that we long for- not to the dull, hard, plodding earth, as so many would have us believe.
The Sea, the macrocosm of that floating oasis, safe within a mothers' womb, that inner ocean, is the safe harbor we all instinctively seek , and it was always thus- all great goddesses began as sea goddesses, and it is in mermaids, the slender remembrance of this once-powerful ancestress- the great fish spawner of us all, that we see, feel, remember that we once belonged to, and in, the Sea.
The image of the Mermaid, this fairytale being, this mythical creature, holds so many variable interpretations, as to personality, traits, attitudes, that she joins the ranks of other ancestral gods who personified great truths, great planetary realities that we can neither understand nor ever hope to escape, but only feel and know.
Naturally, we can pollute our original home, the Oceans, fill them up with toxins, over-fish, destroy in many ways the seas, and we do, and increasingly so under the cruel regime of the Bush Monster and his henchmen. It is up to us, the caring, the humane, the feeling beings to stop the evil ones.

.The helpless innocents of the world and all our resources are calling to us - the Siren Song is now sounding a loud alarm of emergency.- Until we wake up as a group and stop the cruel greed of the handfuls of people who profit by spoiling it, we each are part of the legions of evil who are ruining our beautiful planet, because to do nothing is to help kill all life.
Since we have lost our sea legs- our tails - we can never really know the Sea, even if we should make of it a dead ocean. Perhaps that fact alone draws feeble-egoed men to want to destroy it. The wiser among us, the kind, the compassionate, and the rational, know that we are all tied together in destiny. We are really like one cell. Each part of the planet works together in symbiotic perfection, if left alone by people, to create an Eden-like paradise, alone in the universe.The land, yes, the skies, yes- at least, in our own planet's atmosphere- but it's almost inconceivable that we could be witnessing the ruination of all the great oceans of the world. Their remoteness and impenetrability makes them all too vulnerable, for most of us cannot see the suffering we are allowing to go on there, by our apathy.
Their vastness alone serves to diminish our egos- the impenetrable depths, which may, or may not, hold such secrets as enormous squids, heretofore unknown- primitive beings phosphorescent and luminous, octupi big enough to swallow an atomic sub, and, or, Mertribes.

The ocean seems so huge a concept and still holds so much mystery that most fail to see the fragility of so unfathomable a body of water, and to be able to compute the enormity of the daily onslaughts against it.
Its' silent inhabitants drift or swim along, unable to sound for help. Let us all raise our voices for them, and vote for them and make every choice in life with them in mind.
We like to think that maybe, yes, just maybe…after all the fairy trees are felled, if jungles echo with the joyous cries of rare monkeys no more, if the forests and mountains hold no hiding spots for Bigfoot any longer, that, perhaps, the mermaids will still hold sway- elegant, regal, gracile, and wild.
If you'd like to continue to think that way, you must join all of us would-be Mermaids, Mermen, and MerKids, and fight for the goodness, for the beauty and the innocence of the world.
To save the mermaids' habitat and that of all creatures, including us, please fight the evil of the republicans any way you can. Vote.
