Mermaids, Myths, History and More

Ocean has a real interest in history, anthropology, psychology, and loves to delve into the zeitgeist of cultures, into the sources of beliefs and the understanding of how only the consideration of many fields, including the arts and common human compulsions and needs contribute into the creation of worldwide myths, such as those encompassing the concept of the mermaid and merman.

Ocean's Book, The History of the Mers, will be available here at our Ocean Book section,  and at other sites in the later spring, 2007.

Also, remember that Manatees were an early personification of the idea of the Mers, so visit Manatee.TV and see more about them and about how to help them.

The History of the Mers

by Ocean

The Mers are the entire group of sea beings, essentially, and we will narrow down the field considerably, and here investigate only the mythological ones, including mermaids, mermen, and other combinations of our familiar land beings, including us, and also some of the sea monsters.

Included in our investigation of the Mers and their history in our collective unconscious are the reasons for our preoccupation with sea beings, the reason we both identify with and vilify them, along with idealizing them at other times, the types of myths, the reasons for them, and the notable mermaid tales that persist throughout human history.

Also, the types of personalities of the Mers, the functions they fulfill for different times, peoples, and civilizations, the religious concepts related to the Mers, and the shared details that make the Mers universal.

Mermania?

Technically, that would mean being wild about the Sea, which all of us definitely are.

Some of us more than others, of course.

Mermaniacs exist for surfing or swimming, scurfing or water skiing, snorkeling or diving or just for gazing at seascapes.

And the others love Mer stories, myths, and legends from the depths.

Exploring our interior seascapes as well as the real ones, Ocean takes us on fathomless voyages as she relates the time-honored tales about The Mers, the fish who resemble humans above the waist, and sport those lovely tails as well.
